Art and Design in Modern
Custom Folding Knives
This new
book mixes GREAT Inspirational Knife Art & Engraving with how-to
information.
A
wonderful new book titled
Art and Design in Modern Custom Folding Knives will be
released in March 2003. This is the collaboration of work between the
author Dr. David Darom of Jerusalem
Israel and 22 of the most respected Knife makers and Engravers from around
the world. The book was written by the artists themselves and edited
by Bud Lang of Blades
International.
This exciting new book is not
only a high quality Art Book including full page high resolution
photographs, but each of the artists has included a sequence of steps to
some part of making or engraving their featured art knife for the book.
For instance, knife maker Tim Herman discloses his highly sought after
"color engraving" techniques in his section and knife maker Fred
Carter illustrated the sequence on how he overlays gold for a dragonfly on his
exquisite featured folding art knife.
Included with the art portfolios
is a section written by a group of world class experts explaining the various aspects of this modern art form.
This section includes the topics: The Art of
Mosaic Damascus (Steve Schwarzer), The Art of Modern Hand Engraving (Steve
Lindsay), The Art of Scrimshaw (Linda Karst Stone), Anodizing Titanium
(John Lewis Jensen), Locking Mechanisms in Folders (Ron Appleton), Knife
Shows, Collecting Hand Made Knives (Bud Lang) and Collecting as a Way of
Life (Dr. Pierluigi Peroni).
The eight-page sections
dedicated to each of the 22 Featured Artists (Arranged alphabetically
after the introduction) consist of the following:
1. The artist's picture, biography and personal signed statement.
2. A photographic sequence showing the artist creating one of the features
of a folder made specially for the book.
3. A full page illustration of the "Featured Folder" created for the book.
4. Five pages showing choice art folders made by the artist in recent
years, through November 2002.
This book is different from
previously published books in the field. It mixes GREAT Inspirational Knife
Art and Engraving with how-to information. The book is a single
volume, case bound, 256 pages, 11 1/2 inches high by 9 inches wide,
depicting over 300 handmade folding knives. The book's ISBN number
is 9789650711740.
Below is more information
about this fantastic book from the book's publisher, Paolo Saviolo of
World Wide Distribution, from Vercelli, ITALY.
In order to present this
unique form of art in its fullest, we provided an insight into the
personal lives of the artists as well as their thoughts and feelings about
their craft - breathing life into steel
objects. This was achieved only by the
full and enthusiastic cooperation of everyone involved, presented here in
the form of their biographies and signed personal
statements. This book is the first ever to document the art of some of the
greatest knife makers in the world. Various processes of their art in
production, the tools and materials
they use, and over 300 pieces of their art were combined to produce this
exclusive work of art. To complete the documentation of this astounding
modern art form, a group of
world class experts wrote an original introduction to the book. It
displays the various aspects of this modern art form, as it has never been
shown before.
The resulting joint
achievement is a printed "Hall of Fame" for a wondrous form of modern art.
Showing the world how men and women bring forth secrets hidden in steel,
breathing life and great beauty into pieces of metal.
