Tim Herman Studio of Fine Engraving

Olathe Kansas (913) 839-1924

Tim Herman is accepting students for one-on-one engraving instruction. Students may request specific study courses tailored to their needs: Beginner to advanced, from banknote shading to bulino line and dot work. Flights arrive in Kansas City International Airport, where Tim is available to pick up students and take them to a hotel close by his studio in Olathe, Kansas. There is no set schedule, so students may schedule for whenever it is convenient for them. Please call to inquire further. Tim Herman started engraving in the early 80's to add to his artistic handmade knives now known the world over. Tim was also a commercial airbrush illustrator doing super-realistic illustrations. He worked with a well-known New York rep and did work for most of the top New York ad agencies. After looking at some very elaborate and realistic engravings on fine guns, he developed a style and technique for executing this photographic engraving in full color. His full color technique can be seen at any angle, not just a single, exact angle with a good light. This technique was fully developed in the late 80's. To this day, Tim is still the only engraver doing this remarkable color engraving. Tim had used the GRS equipment for years until he had the opportunity to work with a Lindsay Classic AirGraver. He now uses only the Lindsay AirGravers in his work, with the exception of a handheld dotting tool he created for his bulino pieces.

Roland BAPTISTE Engraving Studio (Belgium)

Modave (Belgium) +32 476 845 560

Roland Baptiste would like to offer classes for people wanting to learn how to engrave with older and modern techniques.  The tradition of Liege has been characterized by the use of the hammer and graver for centuries in this city.  (The city of Liege has a very famous history of weaponry and many makers are known throughout the world are from Liege.)   Roland offers one of the few possibilities to work with a PalmControl AirGraver in Europe.  Pupils will be taught one on one in order for the training to be more personalized.  Pupils will work under optimal conditions.

The courses are on a 5 days basis for a sum of 600€ ( +-$900US).

Classes will be held from 8:30 am to 5 pm.

There is a nice hotel in the proximity www.hoteldestouristes.be and several restaurants.  Lunch will be provided at Roland's.

Engraving, for Roland Baptiste, is a passion passed on to him by his father.  As a young child Roland was intrigued by the sound of hammer and chisel from his father's engraving workshop.  It was thus quite natural that he would be directed towards studying engraving at the School of Arms manufacture at Liege.  He graduated in 1993 after having refined his talent during years at an occupation which enabled him to unceasingly improve the control of his tools of engraving.  He decided finally to devote his time entirely to the art of engraving.  He was determined to preserve his freedom of expression and creativity which led him to refuse to yield to the constraint of manufacturing in series, even for famous makers.  He preferred to turn to certain arms manufacturers and private individuals with whom he was privileged to be creative when working on projects.  He has worked mainly with contacts from France, Germany and Belgium creating fine weapons to achieve the highest quality which a Master can reach.  The signature of his work is found in the details of his work.  He has been present at various shows  such as Rambouillet, Country Show, Knives in festival with Nontron, Eghezιe and Amay.  He has always been pleased to explain the techniques and subtleties of his work.  When you meet, it take a student only a few moments to share his vision of the most beautiful weapons of hunting.

At first glance education may look expensive... time off from life and work to attend, plus transportation, lodging, tuition, etc. However, these workshops have been carefully thought out and designed to save you more than they cost.

You will save months of time struggling with techniques. You will learn to do it correctly, safely, with fewer mistakes, and less chance of developing bad habits. You will learn shortcuts, tricks, and procedures that have taken 40 years to gather and distill.

You will be able to make educated and economical decisions about the tools and materials you choose to purchase and work with. We do not sell tools here, we simply teach.  Every brand product and tool ever made is available for you to try out on your own. Properly used, modern tools can shorten your learning curve by up to 70%!

What you actually DO with your own hands in a live teaching environment is far more valuable than just watching or reading about it. This kind of an education is an investment in yourself - whether your goal is relax at a hobby, take the hobby to the next level, or add to your skills as a professional metalsmith.

There are also two working studios on the premises where you can see how everything is done in real life rather than just the classroom environment. You will leave with a good grasp of what it would take to set up your own shop, as well as contacts and sources to aid you in the future.

If you are traveling a long distance, and airport security is a problem, you really don't need to bring anything. Everything can be furnished here. If you do choose to bring some small favorite tools (magnification, scribes, dividers, burnisher, pens, etc.) you'll probably want to put them in checked baggage. I advise you to clearly label and inventory all items and place them in clear zip lock bags – along with your contact information, cell phone number, and our address & information as well. Shipping is another option. You can ship your tools here, or send the projects and tools you make in class back home. (Email for a complete tool list, recommended brands, and sources)
